Consortium Nomination Summary

 

The Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment (AHW), the state's largest health philanthropy based in the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), is seeking qualified nominees to support its mission through a volunteer board position on its public oversight body--the MCW Consortium on Public and Community Health.

The MCW Consortium on Public and Community Health (Consortium) serves as the public oversight body for the community-focused funding investments of the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment (AHW) as the public oversight board for the community-focused investments of the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment (AHW).

The Consortium was created by MCW to fulfill the obligations of a public oversight body as directed in a 2002 Order of the Commissioner of Insurance of Wisconsin (the Order). The board works to improve the health of the people of Wisconsin by executing both strategic and fiduciary oversight to support the stewardship of AHW funds in partnership with the Medical College of Wisconsin, and in accordance with the Order of the Commissioner of Insurance and the AHW Five-Year Plan.

The Consortium is composed of nine board members: four members selected from candidates nominated by statewide and community health advocacy organizations; four members representing the MCW School of Medicine; and a final member selected by the Insurance Commissioner of the State of Wisconsin.

Nominations may be submitted only by eligible Wisconsin-based organizations. Individuals may not self-nominate. Find nominator and nominee eligibility details in the full Call for Nominations.

 

Nomination Deadline: 12 p.m. (CST), February 28, 2025

 

Nomination Guidelines

In accordance with the Order, individuals may not nominate themselves but must be nominated by an organization that meets the following eligibility criteria:

  • Organization is Wisconsin-based

  • Organization has operated for at least five years

  • Organization is widely recognized as a nonprofit or governmental advocate organization that is independent of influence by Blue Cross & Blue Shield United of Wisconsin (BCBSUW), affiliates of Blue Cross & Blue Shield United of Wisconsin, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health

 

Nominee Guidelines

The Order also requires that the members of the MCW Consortium on Public and Community Health be representative from the following broad categories:

Health care advocate

A qualified representative of a non-profit organization that is a statewide advocate concerning a broad range of healthcare issues, that has operated for at least five years, is widely recognized as a care advocate, and is independent of influence by BCBSUW, affiliates of BCBSUW, and the medical schools.

Or,

Community health advocate

A qualified, independent representative from among the following:

  • An advocate concerning health issues of particular concern to a minority community
  • An advocate concerning health issues of particular concern to women
  • An advocate concerning health issues of particular concern to senior citizens
  • An advocate concerning children’s health issues

Along with the above representation, AHW is interested in learning about candidates who represent aspects of some or all of the following:

  • Are experienced in and reflect the diversity of sectors that intersect with health improvement across Wisconsin
  • Are knowledgeable about systemic health inequities
  • Are experienced in all aspects of board governance, including fiduciary and strategic
  • Are familiar with Wisconsin’s health needs, including those of local communities
  • Are familiar with different philanthropic approaches
  • Have served in a leadership role in the development of a community initiative that has improved the public’s health
  • See value in communities and academic institutions working together to reach a common goal of improved health
  • Can articulate the ways in which they see communities and academics working together
  • Holds a vision for the impact that AHW investments can have in improving the health of Wisconsin communities
  • Can provide a strong example of their work with diverse communities

 

Nomination Submission

Nominations are due by 12 p.m. (CST), February 28, 2025. Nominating organizations must fill out and submit the online nomination form. No paper or emailed copies of nominations will be accepted.

The process to fill vacancies on the MCW Consortium on Public and Community Health board is conducted in accordance with the guidelines in the 2002 Order of the Commissioner of Insurance of the State of Wisconsin, which guides the purpose and oversight of AHW.

In accordance with the order, individuals may not nominate themselves, but must be nominated by an organization that meets the following eligibility criteria:

Candidates nominated to fill the public member vacancy on the Consortium who meet the basic requirements and confirm their interest (see Nomination Submission details in the full Call for Nominations) will be interviewed by AHW staff and/or the Nominating Subcommittee.

The Nominating Subcommittee is composed of current Consortium members other than the member who is vacating a position and other than the members appointed by the MCW Board of Trustees as Trustee representatives.
