In Wisconsin, there’s a shortage of primary care physicians. While the number of physicians in the state has increased 13% over the last decade, the number of primary care doctors has only increased 7%.

It’s a shortage that is hitting rural Wisconsin hard. With specialties that include family medicine, internal medicine, and pediatrics, primary care practitioners are often a patient’s first contact for diagnosing a health issue. In rural communities, they are relied on to treat a wider variety of health issues since specialists are often located in more densely populated areas.

The Family Peace Center, located in Milwaukee, first opened in 2015 as a partnership between Children’s Wisconsin and Sojourner and is now the state’s largest provider of domestic violence prevention and intervention services. It houses 18 service agencies focused on various aspects of helping families heal from the trauma of violence. In 2018, the organization noticed that the children of the adults they serve were not receiving services at the rate they expected. A routine client survey showed that while 80 percent of respondents had children, less than 25 percent of those children were being connected to services.

Children who witness family violence experience a variety of negative biological, behavioral, emotional, cognitive, and social consequences and are at a greater risk of perpetrating or being victimized by violence as adults—making it crucial they have access to services that allow them to process their emotions and heal.

April 27, 2021, Posted by AHW Endowment

The Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment (AHW), a statewide health philanthropy based at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has announced a $230,000 funding award to support a coalition of partners in increasing COVID-19 vaccination rates in Milwaukee County, with a focus on 10 highly impacted and high-risk ZIP codes.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the systemic disparities in health equity that exist based on race and ethnicity in our state that have had a significant impact in Milwaukee County in particular,” said Jesse Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH, director of the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment and senior associate dean at the Medical College of Wisconsin. “To address these disparities, we aim to support the expansion of work to reach Milwaukee County’s highly impacted and vulnerable residents while building a model that can inform continuing efforts across the state.”
