Today marks the start of the annual National Public Health Week. It’s a week to celebrate the work and impact of public health – and the people who make it all possible. I think we can all agree that, after the past year, those who work in public health deserve so much more than a week to honor their work. 

Over the past year, public health workers across the nation have stepped forward in unimaginable circumstances – facing the global threat of COVID-19 by bringing the best science and public health recommendations to their communities on a daily basis.

Taking on Heart Disease: Improving Health Outcomes Through Research, Education, and Community Outreach

As the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread through the country last year, data quickly emerged that certain illnesses increased the risk of serious complications and death. Chief among those was heart disease and the large group of conditions that affect the heart and cardiovascular system. Estimates indicate that while 1% of healthy individuals die from COVID-19, that number jumps to 10% for those with cardiovascular disease, and even as high as 52% for those with heart failure.

These numbers were a cause for alarm among local health professionals, who recognized how prevalent cardiovascular disease is not only nationally, but also in Wisconsin. Across the state, heart disease continues to be the leading cause of death.

Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH spoke with Adam Howarth for the Wisconsin Veterans Forward podcast, produced by the Wisconsin Veterans Chamber of Commerce, about his service in the military, his history of advocacy for the LGTBQ community, and AHW’s investments in supporting veterans’ health.

Dr. Ehrenfeld is a combat veteran and former U.S. Navy Commander who deployed to Afghanistan during both Operation Enduring Freedom and Resolute Support Mission where he cared for servicemembers wounded in combat.

AHW Director Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH spoke with Audrey Nowakowski with Lake Effect about his experience in the military and his role in helping to spark a nationwide conversation that led to the repeal of the transgender military ban. 

Six years ago, Dr. Ehrenfeld was serving in Afghanistan when he asked then Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter about his stance on transgender individuals serving in the military during a town hall. His response set off a series of events that pushed equality forward.

The event was hosted by Jesse M. Ehrenfeld, MD, MPH, senior associate dean and director of AHW and featured keynote speaker Cara V. James, PhD, president and CEO of Grantmakers in Health and a panel of leaders in Wisconsin’s COVID-19 response:

  • Tito Izard, MD, CEO of Milwaukee Health Services, Inc.
  • Ben Weston, MD, MPH, director of medical services at the Milwaukee County Office of Emergency Management and associate professor at the Medical College of Wisconsin
