Protecting the Vulnerable: Bringing PPE to Wisconsin Nursing Homes

It was late February when positive cases of the coronavirus were first reported at Life Care Center, a nursing home in Kirkland, Wash. In the days that followed, news headlines highlighted the rapid increase in individuals who became infected — and the resulting deaths.

The outbreak was a significant point in United States’ entrance into the fight against COVID-19, and gave Americans a real-time look at something that epidemiologists like the Medical College of Wisconsin’s Dr. Silvia Munoz-Price already knew: That facilities such as nursing homes are extremely vulnerable to the spread of infections.

As COVID-19 has spread around the globe, new guidance, updated data, and the latest news stories have become a constant on TV, in our email inboxes, and across social media.

In any native language, trying to absorb it all is overwhelming. Now imagine trying to swim through the ocean of information in your second language, or one that you don’t speak or read at all. It’s nothing short of impossible.

Yet it’s the exact challenge facing many of Wisconsin’s Hmong residents today – and the focus of an AHW-funded response being led by the Hmong American Friendship Association (HAFA).

Monday was a day like so many others I have had in my career as a physician — and yet quite peculiar. As usual, I woke up at 5 a.m. — kissed my son, husband, and pooch goodbye and drove to the hospital to care for a dozen patients needing surgery, as I am an anesthesiologist. But driving into work there was no traffic. On arrival at the hospital, the parking lot was only half full and everyone walking in wore a mask. As I left my car and approached my office suite, the front walkway had been decorated by community members, with colorful sidewalk chalk messages of support for our work to care for those in need.
