AHW Population and Community Health Studies Pathway Image

On a sunny, cold February day in 2019, representatives from a network of agencies across Milwaukee gathered at the Greater Galilee Baptist Church in Milwaukee’s Lindsay Heights neighborhood. They were there to hear Dr. Leonard Egede, professor of medicine, chief of general internal medicine, and director of the Center for Advancing Population Science at the Medical College of Wisconsin, share his vision for addressing health disparities across 10 Milwaukee zip codes.

The cost of opening and operating a shelter was out of reach, so the center’s leadership looked at a more sustainable solution: change the system to work better for these women, and for the community as a whole.

AHW Education and Workforce Development Pathway Image

As a statewide philanthropy housed within a private academic medical center, AHW has always funded cutting-edge research that improves health. When the endowment created funding pathways in 2019, devoting one entirely to research was a no-brainer.

“This is where so much of our MCW expertise lays,” said Kristen Gardner-Volle, program manager overseeing the pathway. “We believe advancing new discovery and creating new knowledge is critical to impacting health in our state, and leads to better clinical care, new treatments, and real population-level results.”
