Today, nationwide, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year on this day, we pause to remember his life, honor his legacy, and push forward.
As I reflect on all that has happened over the past year – including the last 12 days – the question of how exactly to move forward is at the top of my mind.
It’s easy to look at where we are today and feel that we have only gone backward; that there are too many challenges to confront around racism, equity, disparities, and justice; and that our own actions may not be enough.

Looking back on 2020, a sentiment I heard repeatedly was: “I can’t wait until this year is over.” I heard it from family, friends, and colleagues. To be honest, I uttered those words more than once myself.
There are many reasons I’m happy to say goodbye to 2020. The year was, truly, unprecedented. But as I look back over all that we have overcome, I can’t help but feel an enormous sense of gratitude; 2020 was difficult, but it was also full of progress and accomplishments.
The year gave me the time to pause and watch my son Ethan grow from taking his first steps to full-on running down our hallway backwards. The time to say goodbye to our beloved pooch Maddie, and to welcome two new furry friends, Sam and Ira, into our home. At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was clear that Milwaukee County was being hit particularly hard. In May, the county was home to 39% of the state’s confirmed cases and 56% of fatalities, despite only making up 16% of the state’s total population.
To address the need for action, the County’s Office of Emergency Management initiated the Milwaukee County Unified Emergency Operations Center to monitor and support the countywide response to COVID-19. But their work was met with an immediate challenge: the need for focused data analysis to help guide decision-making. In order to address local impact, the group needed local data analyzed and interpreted by epidemiologists—experts in investigating the incidence, occurrence, and possible control of diseases and other health issues—who could assess the current impact and provide critical analysis that would help leaders monitor and respond appropriately.
