Preventing Injury: Exploring Smaller Head Impacts as a Cause of Concussion

February 25, 2021, Posted by AHW Endowment

Vaccine

It’s estimated that as many as 3.8 million sports-related concussions occur annually in the United States. They result in over 200,000 trips to the emergency department and can affect critical brain functions like memory, judgement, speech, and muscle coordination. The long-held understanding of how a concussion occurs is based on a single head impact injury – think of the blow to a head from a car accident or the high-speed collision of two athletes. However, new data points to a second, more subtle, cause of concussion – high numbers of smaller, repetitive head impacts sustained over time.

Called a subconcussive impact, the injury is less severe and does not result in a concussion on its own. But the way these smaller impacts accumulate in the body is not well understood and is the focus of new research led by researchers at the Medical College of Wisconsin.

Increasing Access: Improving Immunization Rates by Leveraging Pharmacists

January 28, 2021, Posted by AHW Endowment

Vaccine

On December 11, the U.S. achieved a major milestone toward eradicating COVID-19 when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved an emergency use authorization for the first COVID-19 vaccine. In a matter of days, health care professionals began administering doses to eligible individuals in the initial phase of vaccination.

Included in those who jumped into action to provide vaccinations across the state were pharmacists, thanks to a dedicated statewide focus on expanding their role in providing vaccinations over the past few years. The effort is helping to increase the number of locations where Wisconsin residents can receive vaccinations, including vaccines for COVID-19, thanks to work led by the Pharmacy Society of Wisconsin.

A Message from the Director: Forward

AHW Blog Image-Message from Director Collage

Today, nationwide, we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Each year on this day, we pause to remember his life, honor his legacy, and push forward.

As I reflect on all that has happened over the past year – including the last 12 days – the question of how exactly to move forward is at the top of my mind.

It’s easy to look at where we are today and feel that we have only gone backward; that there are too many challenges to confront around racism, equity, disparities, and justice; and that our own actions may not be enough.
