Project Description Narrative:


Wisconsin is ranked 50th amongst all states for access to oral health services for children enrolled in Medicaid. To improve access to dental health services and reduce the impact and incidence of dental disease on overall health outcomes, project partners will establish a medical dental integration model where primary care clinics integrate dental hygienists into the medical team to provide preventive services to pregnant women and young children.

Project Updates:


  • Engaged eight health systems in the system change work of integrating dental hygienists into primary care clinics
  • Two health systems enrolled and began implementing the model during wave one, which began in October 2019. One of these health systems (Sixteenth Street Community Health Center) spread the model to two of their clinics and hired two additional dental hygienists. A total of three clinics and four dental hygienists participated in wave one
  • Eight health systems participated in an introductory meeting during wave two, which began in March 2020. This resulted in four clinics enrolling to begin work on the project
  • Shifted from a learning collaborative framework to providing individual team technical assistance due to COVID-19
