Learning Event Support: Addressing Knowledge Gaps and Reducing Barriers in Substance Abuse Treatment for APRNs in Wisconsin

Providing advanced practice registered nurses knowledge and training to effectively manage substance use disorders

Full Project Name:Learning Event Support: Addressing Knowledge Gaps and Reducing Barriers in Substance Abuse Treatment for APRNs in WisconsinPrimary Community Organization:University of Wisconsin OshkoshAward Amount:$5,000
Award Date
December2023

Project Description Narrative:

Wisconsin's substance use treatment gap for adults is 69%, and all but six counties in the state have some psychiatric provider shortages. This learning event will equip advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) with the knowledge, skills, and networks necessary to manage substance use disorders (SUDs) in their clinical practice. Due to variances in APRN education, training, and clinical experiences, barriers are present for the treatment of SUD. Formal graduate-level academic competencies are not standardized for the APRN graduate student.

The event will draw a diverse group of nurse practitioners from the Fox Valley area. Because the learning event answers a need that was identified by APRNs themselves, it is informed by and supported by the intended audience. The conference will be developed and delivered in collaboration with University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh professors and area providers that specialize in the treatment of substance use disorders. This event will increase provider confidence and most importantly patient safety and outcomes.
