2022 open call for reviewers

Application Deadline: Applications are due by 5 p.m. (CST) on October 1, 2021.

Review Details: AHW is actively seeking Wisconsin-based individuals with a broad range of expertise and experience across health and science research, health care, and community and public health to serve as merit reviewers for our upcoming funding application cycle.

Merit review panelists are a critical and valuable component of our competitive application process, ensuring that AHW funding awards support promising projects that can drive health improvement and advance health equity across Wisconsin.

Reviewers will engage in a two-part review process that includes desk reviews of both letter of intent proposals and full proposals, as well as virtual review meetings with a panel of peer merit reviewers.

Review Timelines: Interested reviewers should make note of the following review timelines and confirm their availability to engage in the review process:

  • Letter of intent desk review will occur from mid-November to mid-December 2021 with a virtual review meeting anticipated to occur the week of December 13
  • Full proposal desk review will occur from mid-March to mid-April 2022 with a virtual review meeting anticipated to occur the week of April 25

Compensation: Reviewers from agencies and organizations external to the Medical College of Wisconsin are compensated for their time. Employees of MCW are not eligible for payment related to proposal review.

  What are the expectations as a merit reviewer?

All merit reviewers are required to complete all required paperwork in advance of beginning the review process and participate in a brief orientation discussion with AHW.

Each merit reviewer is assigned a set of proposals to conduct an individual desk review and submit scores and comments through AHW’s online reviewer portal by the requested deadline. All merit reviewers are required to participate in merit review meetings to discuss the outcome of the individual desk review and complete final scoring of the submitted proposals.

  What is the estimated time commitment for the review process?

Time commitment varies based on the number of proposals received and the composition of the merit review panel. AHW estimates the following time commitments for the following aspects that may be included in a merit review process (subject to change):

  • Orientation discussion: Approximately 1 hour
  • Letter of Intent Review
    • Individual desk review: Approximately 1.5 hours of review time per proposal with an estimated review load of approximately 3-5 proposals assigned to each reviewer
    • Merit review meeting: Approximately 3-4 hours of meeting time
  • Full Proposal Review
    • Individual desk review: Approximately 3 hours of review time per proposal with an estimated review load of approximately 2-3 proposals assigned to each reviewer
    • Merit review meeting: Approximately 3-4 hours of meeting time
  How many reviewers are needed for each review panel?

On average, AHW merit review panels consist of approximately 8-15 reviewers, although the specific number of reviewers needed depends on the number of proposals submitted for a given funding opportunity and the cumulative expertise and experience needed among the full review panel.
