Learning Event Support: Building Capacity for Suicide Postvention in Wisconsin

Expanding community capacity for suicide postvention through evidence-based strategies

Full Project Name:Learning Event Support: Building Capacity for Suicide Postvention in WisconsinPrimary Community Organization:NAMI SE WI for Prevent Suicide Greater MilwaukeeAward Amount:$5,000
Award Date
August2025
Project Duration:4 months

Project Summary:

In 2022, Wisconsin experienced a total of 948 suicides, with over 127,000 individuals impacted. This doesn’t take into consideration the impact of multiple suicide losses for an individual or a community, as well as other traumatic events occurring in the community. Postvention is a collaborative approach to support individuals who have experienced a suicide loss, addressing the healing process, the negative effects of suicide loss, and the prevention of additional suicides.

The goal of this event is to provide information and education on evidence-based postvention strategies to a wide audience across Wisconsin. PSGM will lead this effort to bring a national expert and lived experience advocate to increase capacity to address postvention as prevention. Participants will be able to apply what they learn during the event in collaborative discussions.

A coordinated community response to postvention should include a variety of stakeholders to increase the success of the response and ensure sustainability. Similarly, the primary audience for this learning event will include a variety of stakeholders across Wisconsin. The audience includes coalition members from the Milwaukee Suicide Review Commission, which is comprised of health care providers, mental health providers, schools, public health agencies, law enforcement, and suicide prevention organizations.
