Project Summary:

The Medical College of Wisconsin will host the Society of Black Academic Surgeons (SBAS) Annual Scientific Meeting, a national convention focused on advancing research innovation, and mentorship in academic surgery. As part of this meeting, MCW will host a dedicated half-day learning event centered on research innovation in surgery. This session will bring together surgeons, residents, fellows, and medical students from across Wisconsin and beyond to explore emerging trends, challenges, and opportunities in surgical research. The goal of the event is to build capacity and foster collaboration among Wisconsin-based health professionals by sharing cutting-edge strategies in clinical, translational, and inclusive research. By equipping participants with new tools and insights, the event supports MCW’s broader mission to improve health outcomes across Wisconsin, reduce cancer disparities, and strengthen the state’s research and healthcare workforce.

Through targeted content and interactive discussion, the session will offer a platform for exchanging ideas, sparking collaboration, and identifying actionable ways to integrate research into surgical practice. Sessions will feature nationally recognized leaders in academic surgery, health equity, and cancer research. These components are designed to inspire and equip participants to drive meaningful change in their own institutions and communities, supporting a healthier, more equitable future for all Wisconsinites. Organizers anticipate a Wisconsin-based health workforce audience comprised of up to 400 surgeons, residents, fellows and medical students in all fields of academic surgery.

Community Partners: Donald C. Ausman Family Foundation, Washington University School of Medicine
