Project Summary:
Young children and young adults who serve as unpaid family caregivers remain largely overlooked in healthcare workforce training, despite their critical role in caring for adults with conditions like motor neuron diseases, dementia, cancer, and progressive disabilities. Supporting education for healthcare professionals about this population is essential for improving care outcomes and support systems.
This event will provide comprehensive training for healthcare workers to identify, assess, and support young caregivers. The program features expert panel discussions covering pediatric mental health, trauma, and communication methods, and interactive breakout sessions introducing practical tools and best practices. The event will also include resource tables from regional support organizations and premiere "LUKi & the Lights," a film addressing young caregivers' needs.
Attendees will include health professionals, ranging from physicians, nurses, and advanced practice practitioners to students in related fields. Representatives from government aging units, human service programs, K-12 schools, higher education institutions, and human service organizations are also welcomed to attend.
