STRYVtime: Community-Based Train-the-Trainer Model

Piloting an innovative program to train individuals working with youth outside the classroom setting

Project Duration:18 months

Project Summary:

Wisconsin youth experience health inequities due to socioeconomic factors, and there has been a marked increase in the number of high school students who feel sad or helpless, or who have considered suicide, since the COVID-19 pandemic.

High rates of adverse child experiences (ACEs) are experienced by youth in low-income families and marginalized communities, which can lead to poorer mental and physical health outcomes. Social emotional learning (SEL) has been used to mitigate the effects of ACEs, however, SEL opportunities outside of school are limited.

This project will pilot an innovative program that will provide a train-the-trainer program for adults working with youth outside of classrooms, building resilience and mental wellness in Black and Brown youth—who are disproportionally likely to experience childhood trauma.

Partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Milwaukee, the STRYV365 program will provide Bigs (mentors), volunteers, and staff with SEL education that will benefit participating youth and peers, ages 7-18 who belong to primarily Black and Brown communities.

Through the project, students will learn skills to navigate life’s challenges, relationships, and managing their well-being, forming foundations for life-long health.

Community Partner: Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metro Milwaukee

Outcomes & Lessons Learned:

  • Collaborated with Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) to develop and adopt the STRYV365 train-the-trainer mentorship curriculum for sustainable integration into the Milwaukee community to build youth resilience and improve adolescent mental health
  • Adapted the existing train-the-trainer curriculum model to thrive outside of the school setting, demonstrating that this program allows for broad engagement of youth through other community-based organizations, and indicating that the opportunity has the capability of widespread application
  • Completed training of Big Brothers Big Sisters leadership, staff, and volunteers on the train-the-trainer resilience curriculum and appropriate delivery of the program to youth involved in this organization to ultimately improve their resilience and learn new mental health management skills
