Exploring health issues experienced by homeless and housing-insecure older adults in Milwaukee County
Return to Listing
Housing insecurity and homelessness among older adults represent a growing public health crisis in Milwaukee County, where adults aged 50 and above are the fastest-growing population group experiencing homelessness. The physical and mental health challenges they often face can be worsened by their housing situation, and homeless adults aged 50 may deal with health conditions similar to stably housed individuals who are 15-20 years older than them.
Community Advocates, Inc. will explore the health issues and lived experiences of individuals aged 50 and over who are experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity in Milwaukee County. This project will survey the affected population to identify health equity gaps among vulnerable populations—who are often Black—who have faced disinvestment and discrimination, including people with inadequate income, and those living with disabilities.
Their research findings will inform a detailed report providing a roadmap for future initiatives, with the potential to scale beyond Milwaukee County. This community-led effort will produce evidence-based recommendations for programs and services that can improve health outcomes and housing stability for older adults, ultimately working to prevent homelessness and promote dignity among vulnerable older adults in Wisconsin.
