Project Summary:
Despite Ozaukee County's overall prosperity, many residents face significant food insecurity due to high housing costs, lack of public transportation, and elevated food prices. These challenges are particularly difficult for underserved populations, including migrant workers, seniors in subsidized housing, and single-parent households. With fewer than 10% of Americans consuming the recommended daily intake of fruits and vegetables, and evidence showing that six-month access to fresh produce can significantly improve health outcomes, there is an urgent need to increase access to healthy foods.
The Ozaukee Food Alliance aims to expand its fresh food production and distribution capabilities through enhanced hydroponic systems, additional raised beds, and fruit trees at their new 15,000-square-foot facility. The project will build upon existing community partnerships while developing new collaborations, and the initiative includes plans for a mobile market truck to bring fresh produce directly to communities facing transportation barriers.
This project represents the first step in a larger food-as-medicine initiative that aims to improve health outcomes across Ozaukee County. By combining increased local food production with innovative distribution methods and community education, the project seeks to make healthy choices more accessible while reducing shame barriers associated with food assistance. The ultimate goal is to sustainable improvements in health outcomes for Wisconsin families, particularly those facing physical, financial, or social barriers to accessing fresh foods.
