Advancing health equity for low-income youth in Wisconsin through a new medical nutrition education program
Return to Listing
The number of adolescents with obesity has more than tripled in recent decades, now affecting 18.5% of youth, and Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) experience even higher rates. In Wisconsin, nearly 40% of youth eat less than one serving of fruits or vegetables a day, and 31% of youth are considered overweight or obese. Low-socioeconomic status has been found to be the single most important predictive factor as to whether a child will become obese.
This project will explore combining childhood obesity education, culinary nutrition training, and community-engaged learning and the impact they can have on health outcomes for patients. AHW funding will help accelerate implementation of MedEd2.0, training medical students to deliver FoodRight’s classroom-based culinary education program, bringing medical students into the classroom to share enrichment education programming.
