Project Description Narrative:

Leadership skills and experience are essential for the career development of physicians and surgeons. A surgeon’s leadership abilities are central to success in team-based operating rooms, educating and mentoring others, and their ability to lead in any healthcare setting or system.

Despite the value of leadership education and training for surgeons and physicians, formal training for these skills is not often integrated into medical school or residency programs. When leadership development programs are available, many are external, costly, time-consuming, and require prior leadership training or experience.

This learning event will feature collaborative and interactive professional development programming, including full-day trainings, peer-group sessions, and small-group coaching sessions. A cohort of ten faculty will participate and benefit from this leadership learning experience.

Outcomes & Lessons Learned:

  • Delivered workshops with FOCUS training on the topics of negotiation, change management, and difficult conversations to ten members of the CAPTAINS leadership development program
  • Facilitated participant reporting to department leadership regarding key takeaways from the program
  • Scheduled individual coaching sessions for each participant
  • Collected feedback from participants, 100% of whom declared they felt prepared for the next step in their career because of the program
