Project Description Narrative:


The traditional medical education model dates back 100 years. Today’s physicians work in a more collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment and need new skills to provide patient-centered care that leverages the latest research, technologies, and advancements.

This award will fund the first phase of a three-part plan to implement a new medical education curriculum at the Medical College of Wisconsin by developing a curriculum that emphasizes prevention of death and disability, health care disparities, and health risks.

Outcomes & Lessons Learned:


  • Conceptualized and approved a new model for medical student education
  • Defined competencies using baseline data
  • Piloted the Introduction to Pathway series to orient M1-3 students to the overall purpose and objectives of the pathways
  • Held faculty development sessions based on identified needs
  • Oriented all medical school applicants interviewing at MCW for matriculation in August 2010 to the new curriculum model and pilot application process
