Project Description Narrative:


The traditional medical education model dates back 100 years. Today’s physicians work in a more collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment and need new skills to provide patient-centered care that leverages the latest research, technologies, and advancements.

Through this award, investigators will build upon a previous AHW grant that funded the planning phase of a new medical education curriculum. This pilot phase will test the curriculum with 28 student volunteers over two years.

Outcomes & Lessons Learned:


  • Conducted a two-year pilot of a longitudinal experience, enabling 28 students to work alongside a primary care community preceptor
  • Implemented five pathways (Clinician Educator, Global Health, Master Clinician, Physician Scientist, and Urban and Community Health) designed to allow all first- through third-year students to pursue individualized areas of interest
  • Conducted student and faculty evaluations to inform adjustments to content, style, and structure to meet educational needs
  • Produced a new curriculum model that will be introduced to the entire incoming first year class in the fall of 2012
