A Film-Based Curriculum to Teach Empathy and Cultural Competencies to Residents and Fellows

Project Description Narrative:

Improving empathy and understanding about various patient populations or challenging topics has become increasingly important in graduate medical education. These skills directly impact patient care. Research has demonstrated positive clinical outcomes for patients, including therapeutic effectiveness, improvement in physiological responses, and shorter hospitalization.

In partnership with MKE Film, this project develops a film curriculum to enhance residents’ and fellows’ understanding of the communities they serve, leading to cross-specialty engagement in meaningful discussions. The researchers aim to improve care by increasing empathy for patients in southeastern Wisconsin. This project will provide an opportunity for Medical College of Wisconsin trainees from various specialties to discuss challenging patient care experiences and learn from each other about shared patient populations. In addition, it will provide opportunities for residents and fellows to interact outside of the hospital walls, build comradery, and improve relationships across specialties.
