Learning Event Support: Student Leadership Development Initiative

Helping Medical College of Wisconsin students recognize and develop effective leadership styles as future physician leaders

Full Project Name:Learning Event Support: Student Leadership Development InitiativePrimary Community Organization:MCW Institute for Health & Equity - Division of Community HealthAward Amount:$5,000
Award Date
February2020
Project Duration:28 months

Project Description Narrative:

Today's medical students are tomorrow's physician leaders. It is essential that students are given early exposure to the diverse, exciting leadership roles that exist in healthcare for physicians that are complementary to their clinical roles. However, MCW and the vast majority of medical schools lack standardized, formal curricula for all medical students in needed and desired leadership development and the business of healthcare.

Through Learning Event Support funding, the learning event aims to help students recognize and develop effective leadership styles as future physician leaders. The Student Leadership Development Initiative supports students to understand career opportunities and strategies to achieve professional goals, adopt fundamental values of good leadership essential to motivating a clinical team, learn how to better practice a healthy lifestyle in mind, body, and spirit, garner insights into teamwork, mentorship, and innovation, and be introduced to people and resources to help participating students excel and overcome challenges.

Key Collaborators: MCW Institute for Health & Equity - Division of Community Health, Medical student leaders

Outcomes & Lessons Learned:

  • Hosted six virtual events with 65 medical students focused on leadership qualities required to succeed in private practice and how to establish those skills, entrepreneurship in medicine, and engagement with public health efforts
  • Collective findings across events indicate that participants intend to apply and share their learnings with other medical students and that the events provided new perspectives and knowledge that go beyond their medical school curriculum
