Project Description Narrative:


According to the National Network of Public Helath Institutes (NNPHI), there are 41 states with active public health institutes, and about 20 are characterized as "emerging." In 2006, the Institute for Wisconsin's Health was incorporated to work with and through business, medicine, and public health leaders to catalyze the adoption of effective prevention strategies in the workplace and beyond.

Through this award, project partners will build capacity within Wisconsin's independent public health institute to accelerate its ability to carry out its mission and impact the health of Wisconsin residents.

Outcomes & Lessons Learned:


  • Conducted preliminary work in partnership with the National Network of Public Health Institutes (NNPHI), including development of a needs assessment and development of priority recommendations for action
  • Developed mentor relationship with the Michigan Public Health Institute and actively linked with other successful public health institutes for resources
  • Identified and partnered with a marketing and communications firm to create an interactive web site and organizational identity materials
  • Created a board-generated evaluation framework to track organizational development
  • Revised organizational financial planning based on economic conditions affecting all nonprofits
  • Developed IWHI basic structure, applying for and recieving NNPHI membership as a result of this project
