Project Description Narrative:


Founded in 2011, the Children's Research Institute's Center for Clinical Effectiveness Research (CCER) has a mission to stimulate, facilitate, and support quality, high-impact clinical effectiveness research. Investigators within the CCER focus on observing how treatments improve outcomes that matter to patients, including medical results and quality of life.

In order to enhnance its ability to impact health outcomes for children and families in Wisconsin, this funding award will support the recruitment of an associate director tasked with expanding collaboration, networking, and sharing among clinical effectiveness investigators, building a mentoring community to support research, and generating funding to support further research.

Outcomes & Lessons Learned:


  • Completed the hire of an associate director in June 2014 and a clinical research assistant in March 2015
  • Facilitated collaboration, networking, and sharing of expertise by working with 49 different internal and external collaborators
  • Established a monthly newsletter and ad hoc mailings to actively communicate clinical effectiveness news, grant opportunities, trainings, workshops, and conferences to faculty, staff, and others
  • Provided connection and knowledge of existing data sources for researchers to use for conducting comparative effectiveness research, including creating algorithms to expedite the use of EMR data and linking data sources
  • Leveraged research outcomes to support a full-time research scientist
  • Actively mentored junior faculty and fellows, building a network of clinical effectiveness researchers
  • Submitted 18 funding applications to generate funding to support clinical effectiveness research, receiving 10 funding awards totaling $4.1 million
