Project Summary:
This event will strengthen the competency of Wisconsin's interdisciplinary healthcare workforce in delivering evidence-based asthma care aligned with GINA guidelines. Participants will build practical skills to implement controller-reliever therapy, reduce reliance on SABA-only treatment, and improve consistency of asthma management across clinical and community settings.
Anticipated outcomes include improved asthma control, fewer exacerbations and emergency visits, and reduced missed school and work days.
Participants will use practical tools, including treatment algorithms, asthma action plan templates, and implementation resources, to support immediate application. A live theater-based simulation will demonstrate common communication and system gaps, reinforcing coordinated, guideline-concordant asthma care across the healthcare workforce.
This interprofessional learning event will convene Wisconsin’s healthcare workforce across clinical and allied health disciplines focused on asthma care delivery. Primary clinical participants include family medicine, pediatrics, internal medicine, and primary care clinicians (MDs, DOs, NPs, PAs), along with specialty care providers in allergy/immunology and pulmonology. Key allied health workforce groups include pharmacists, nurses, respiratory therapists, asthma educators, and social workers, representing medication management, chronic disease support, and care coordination roles. School nurses and community health workers will serve as critical bridge roles between healthcare and community-based asthma management. Selected community and youth-serving partners (e.g., school personnel and youth program staff) will participate to support consistent messaging and reinforcement of asthma action plans across settings. Faculty, staff, residents, and medical students from the Medical College of Wisconsin will participate as speakers and learners, contributing to a continuum of workforce development across training and practice levels.
Approximately 120–150 participants are expected, representing a balanced interprofessional mix of healthcare workforce roles engaged in asthma care delivery and coordination across Wisconsin.
