Increasing scientific collaboration between graduate student researchers

Full Project Name:Learning Event Support: Building Bridges: Collaborative Health Science for Graduate Student Researchers and Clinical TraineesPrincipal Investigator:Jasmine Dowell, MD, PediatricsAward Amount:$5,000
Award Date
February2025
Project Duration:5 months

Project Summary:

This co-learning event will teach graduate student researchers and clinical trainees to explore opportunities for scientific collaboration. The event will equip clinical and research trainees to improve Wisconsin residents’ health through clinically relevant research and accelerated translation of scientific findings into clinical contexts. Keynote speakers will highlight the value of team science in translational research. Participants will then explore barriers and opportunities for transdisciplinary collaboration in a world café style interactive session, grouped by aligned interests in their respective disciplines (e.g., cardiovascular, cancer, neurology).

By participating in this event, MCW graduate students and clinical trainees will 1) Understand the training background and expertise of other disciplines and use that knowledge to identify mutually beneficial collaborative opportunities in translational research; 2) Identify shared learning spaces and resources that support team science and health research collaboration at MCW and the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeastern Wisconsin; and 3) Confidently approach cross-disciplinary collaboration in health science research. The event will be open to all MCW postgraduate clinical trainees and graduate students, targeting a balanced audience—50 graduate students and 50 postgraduate clinical trainees.
