Project Duration:18 months

Project Description Narrative:

In Wisconsin and nationally, violence has reached epidemic proportions. Homicides rose over 100% in Milwaukee County from 2019 to 2020. In Wisconsin, critical regions shoulder the greatest burden of violence, including larger cities such as Milwaukee and Kenosha, as well as the lowest resourced neighborhoods and tribal nations. Given the epidemic levels of violence within Wisconsin, it is necessary to develop a comprehensive statewide violence prevention program.

Through this award, the Medical College of Wisconsin's Comprehensive Injury Center will conduct a planning grant and needs assessment to develop the Wisconsin Violence Prevention Project. As an academic resource, the Wisconsin Violence Prevention Project would be available to all communities across Wisconsin and provide expertise, academic partnership, and collaboration with community-based organizations to address the burden of violence.

Outcomes & Lessons Learned:

  • Hired the Director of Violence Prevention within the MCW Comprehensive Injury Center
  • Engaged with Kenosha County Health, Madison-Dane County Public Health, and City of Milwaukee Office of Violence Prevention to support local prevention efforts
  • Developing an injury burden score to be used statewide to determine which communities carry the largest injury burden
