The majority of residents in Berryland, a Milwaukee housing development, and its surrounding area, are African American, and 25% of households are below poverty. This population is considered to be at risk for a lower quality of health care, higher rates of cancer, heart disease, and strokes, and limited access to health services. Agape Community Center has learned, through assessments, that almost 15% of residents use emergency departments as the main source of pediatric services.
Through this project, of Agape Community Center’s service area will identify their strengths and needs in attaining health services with a comprehensive health assessment, using CBPR (community-based participatory research). Nursing students will be involved with all phases of the process, which will provide them with experience to increase their capacity to work in community settings with underserved populations and address prevention strategies.
