Project Description Narrative:
Asthma is the most common reason for preventable hospitalizations and emergency visits by children in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and the U.S. At least 8% of children in Wisconsin under the age of 18 have been told they have asthma, and 30,000 live in Milwaukee County. Asthma occurs most frequently in African American children below the poverty level.
Cultivating asthma-friendly communities is the key to preventing asthma in the long-term. With this project, community-oriented education will be introduced to improve health of children with asthma in Milwaukee and to reduce disparities in asthma outcomes among low-income African Americans.
