Project Description Narrative:

According to data from the 2010 United States Census, the Latino population has a 12.8% diabetes prevalence rate. In Milwaukee, more than 13,000 Latinos have diabetes, and an additional 39,000 are living with pre-diabetes. To improve health outcomes among Latino residents in southeastern Wisconsin, project partners plan to implement a new, sustainable eye disease screening system in the community using mobile teleophthalmology that has shown it can detect early signs of diabetes and pre-diabetes.

Project Updates:

Trained over 20 staff to perform retinal screenings using retinal photographs
Created health and IT workforce development opportunities by facilitating volunteer or internship placements and part-time employment opportunities for students from Carroll University health sciences programs, UW-Milwaukee Nursing programs, UW-Parkside health programs, and Marquette computer science programs as well as students within AmeriCorps and the Medical College of Wisconsin
Reached more than 920 clients at more than 40 community and clinic events through the City of Milwaukee Health Department
