Project Description Narrative:

To ensure that Wisconsin’s physicians are appropriately trained for today’s clinical practice environment, the project team will create a Standardized Teaching, Assessment, and Resource Studio (STARS) for undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education. The studio will provide a low threat/low stakes environment in which physicians in training and physicians in practice can obtain the skills necessary for outstanding clinical care, and thereby advance the health of Wisconsin’s residents.

To develop these skills, the studio will require fully equipped standardized patient exams rooms which allow for real-time and digitally recorded viewing of face-to-fact interactions between trainees and “standardized” patients, several larger exam rooms to accommodate a varied set of scenarios (e.g., surgery procedures, family meeting, bioterrorism detoxification), classrooms, and standardized patient training suites. Complementing this standardized patient area will be a series of simulation studios to support full-body simulations and organ/procedure specific simulators. Each of these simulated exam rooms will require control rooms to allow for two-way communication with the trainee and digital recording of both simulation output (e.g., physiological monitor readings) and trainee actions which can be broadcast to nearby conference rooms for teaching and assessment.
