Project Description Narrative:

Aortic dissection, where tearing occurs in the inner wall of the aorta (the body’s main artery), is a serious condition with a high mortality rate. For patients suffering from an aortic dissection, efficient prevention, timely recognition, and safe surgery can vastly improve clinical outcomes.

With AHW funding support, the Milwaukee Aortic Symposium will educate attendees on the rapidly evolving surgical techniques for aortic dissection. Presentations will cover topics including developments in type B aortic dissection medical and surgical management, best practices for long-term surveillance protocols after type A aortic dissection, and management of aortic stent graft complications.

Outcomes & Lessons Learned:

  • Presented case-based discussions, panels, expert lectures, and patient discussions on topics such as acute and chronic aortic dissection, acute aortic syndromes, surgical techniques, complication avoidance, and emerging technologies for aortic treatment
  • Featured a keynote by Dr. Mark Farber, who delivered a presentation on the history of endovascular aortic repair, sharing significant findings from various treatment approaches, including his own expertise
  • Welcomed a diverse audience of healthcare providers specializing in aortic conditions, such as endovascular/vascular surgeons, interventional radiologists, and cardiologists primarily from the Milwaukee metro area, as well as attendees from northern Illinois, Michigan, and other parts of Wisconsin
  • Invited ongoing collaboration with participants by inviting them to contribute to research projects, case studies, or collaborative initiatives related to aortic conditions
