Increasing use of universal screenings for HIV infections through social network testing
Return to Listing
Failure to diagnose HIV infection can result in increased morbidity, mortality, and cost. In the United States, about one third patients infected with HIV are unaware of their status, leading the CDC to recommend universal screening for all people ages 13-64. In Wisconsin and other states with low HIV-prevalence, the cost and effectiveness of universal screening is a concern.
Through this project, researchers will develop a pilot protocol for the use of social networks testing (SNT): identification, recruitment, and training of individuals presenting for HIV testing to bring untested, high-risk individuals from their social networks in for testing. Through this process, the goal will be to expand the SNT program to Aids Resource Centers of Wisconsin sites and public health clinics throughout the state to improve HIV testing.
