Comparing the effectiveness of masks to inform public health guidance on mask choices
Return to Listing
The use of face masks is suggested for individuals to avoid severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), but there is little consensus on which masks should be worn. While the CDC has suggested that wearing a mask can protect a person from getting infected or spreading infection, there is limited guidance given on how to choose a mask type and why.
This project will examine the rate of SARS-CoV-2 infections, symptoms, and hospitalizations between persons provided with respirators and mask fit guidance and those provided with surgical masks. Current patterns of mask use in diverse populations in community settings will be examined, and comparisons of the use of respirators and surgical masks by community members with and without use training will be performed. The resulting data will support current mask guidance and will also beimportant for future infectious disease management.
