Project Description Narrative:

In Wisconsin and across the U.S., motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of injury and death in children under 15 years old. More than 40% of children killed in Wisconsin motor vehicle crashes were not properly restrained.

This project will build upon a previous pilot study funded by AHW, assessing caregiver behaviors involved with using appropriate restraints. In this next phase, project partners will evaluate the long-term use rates of seats provided to low-income families, determine whether intervention reduces injury rates among children, and track appropriate child passenger restraint system use in order to guide future educational programming, intervention, and policy formation.

Community partners: Milwaukee Health Services Inc., Children’s Hospital and Health System, and YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee, Inc.
