Mass Spectrometric Applications in Metabolomics

Studying pathophysiological processes associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome

Full Project Name:Mass Spectrometric Applications in MetabolomicsPrincipal Investigator:Andrew S Greene, PhD, PhysiologyAward Amount:$321,935
Award Date
September2004
Project Duration:36 months

Project Description Narrative:

The major long-term goal of this project is to develop a mechanistic understanding of the genetic, proteomic, and metabolic processes acting in the initiation, progress, and ultimately, therapeutic treatment of metabolic syndrome and related diseases. Metabolic syndrome is a disease combining obesity, dislipidemia, and insulin resistance that is associated with significant mortality and morbidity. The proposed purchase of an instrument that will facilitate state-of-the-art research in these critical health areas will enhance the Medical College of Wisconsin’s (MCW’s) strength in clinical areas that may directly impact the understanding of metabolic syndrome and foster critical collaborations in this area. Data obtained from this instrument will also support ongoing funded research programs and will increase the competitiveness of MCW faculty for new extramural grant applications.
