Project Description Narrative:

Cancer accounts for 23% of all deaths in Wisconsin, and the disease will cause more than 285,000 deaths nationwide in 2006. The majority of these deaths are caused by breast, lung, prostate, and colon carcinoma. The high incidence and mortality rates of these major forms of cancer underscore the need for new methods to effectively diagnose and treat these malignancies.

This proposal will address this goal by characterizing the expression and functions of guanine nucleotide exchange factor (GEF) SmgGDS in major forms of cancer.

This study will be the first to define the ability of SmgGDS to promote and maintain the malignant phenotype in the major forms of human cancer.
