Project Description Narrative:

Biomedical science is poised at the dawn of a new era, that of stem cell-based therapy. In a relatively short period of time, stem cell-based therapies are predicted to provide cures for a wide range of debilitating diseases, including diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, certain cancers, and heart disease. Few stem cell-related research programs currently exist on the MCW campus, and investigators are relatively new to the field. This project aims to partly fill this vacuum by establishing a dedicated laboratory to maintain, characterize, and transgenically manipulate stem cells for investigational purposes. The long-term goal of the researchers is to expand this laboratory into a core facility that will support the development of stem cell-based regenerative medicine research on the MCW campus.
