Development of Selective Estrogen Receptor Down-Regulators as Novel Therapeutics in the Treatment of Prolactinomas

Developing therapeutics to treat prolactinomas

Full Project Name:Development of Selective Estrogen Receptor Down-Regulators as Novel Therapeutics in the Treatment of ProlactinomasPrincipal Investigator:Sanjay Kansra,PhD, PediatricsAward Amount:$122,946
Award Date
September2008
Project Duration:36 months

Project Description Narrative:

According to the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, approximately 25% of the U.S. adult population has detectable pituitary tumors at autopsy. Prolactinomas, which account for approximately 40% of all pituitary tumors, produce excess amounts of the hormone prolactin (PRL). Hyperprolactinemia is a major cause of infertility in women and impotence in men, and therefore understanding the regulation of PRL production and release is of vital interest. This project will explore the development of novel therapeutics to treat prolactinomas.
