Project Description Narrative:

Over the past several years, large-scale medical trials have unequivocally demonstrated that men who have sex with men (MSM) who are presently uninfected with HIV, but at high behavioral risk for contracting HIV, can be substantially protected from contracting HIV if they follow a daily oral prophylaxis medication regimen. Based on data showing over 92% protection from HIV afforded by the use of PrEP regimens, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Wisconsin Department of Health Services now recommend PrEP for MSM at high risk for contracting HIV. However, PrEP uptake in Wisconsin is very low. MCW's Division of Infectious Diseases estimates that only about 50 persons in Wisconsin are on PrEP regimens, even though the Wisconsin DHS (2016) estimates that over 8,000 residents are high-risk MSM. Interventions that can increase the uptake of PrEP by high-risk, but still uninfected, MSM carry the potential to dramatically reduce HIV transmission in Wisconsin.

Through this study, researchers seek to identify reasons for low PrEP use and develop and test the efficacy of novel interventions designed to reach HIV-positive persons in the community, connect them to medical care, increase treatment adherence and, thereby, reduce transmission of HIV disease.
